My path to ministry was not a direct one, but a journey through intellectual wandering that was ultimately intercepted by a profound, life-altering family crisis that revealed the undeniable reality of God.
My studies began in philosophy at Georgia State University, a period during which I considered myself an atheist and was often antagonistic toward religion. Yet, I couldn't deny the profound effect that reading the works of church fathers like Augustine and Aquinas had on me. I now see that this period was laying an intellectual foundation, softening my heart for the path God had prepared.
The turning point came when my family faced an unimaginable hardship. My mother was involved in a car crash caused by a seizure from a previously unknown growth on her brain. Tragically, the other driver passed away, and due to an injustice in the local court system, my mother was arrested for vehicular homicide and denied bond. It was the most difficult time of our lives, yet while my family and I struggled, my mother, from inside her jail cell, was our rock.
Out of frustration and confusion, I asked her how she could possibly be okay. Her reply was simply, "That's my faith". She told me the only thing sustaining her was her faith in Jesus Christ. In that moment, I saw that Jesus was more than a philosophical idea; He had performed an incredible work in my mother's life, giving her a faith I had only read about in scripture. Her example showed me that God was real.
Seeing my mother's faith in the face of such adversity was the only thing that made sense to me, and I gave my life to Christ. Soon after, I felt an undeniable call to ministry. After a period of prayer and fasting, I knew I had to follow the Lord's leading.
